Tuesday November 24, 2009TOP 3 THANKSGIVING TRAINING TIPS
Want to know the secret to a successful Thanksgiving? We’re not here to talk about making nice to your relatives, we’re here to talk food. In our opinion it’s often what you eat before the meal and the next day(s) that makes the real difference.
1. KISS (Keep it simple (and) skinny) before the meal. Thanksgiving meals are composed of rich foods. You don’t need creamy dip, loads of nuts or cheese before you get to the table. Shrimp, crudite, olives and cornichons are good options.
2. Would you ever ask for second helpings at a restaurant? We hope the answer is no. The same should apply to Thanksgiving and all other holidays. Stick to the one plate rule, no seconds.
3. And finally, did you know the phrase “cold turkey” originally meant requiring little preparation? Please don’t plan to make turkey pasta or any other unappealing leftover recipes. We suggest literally going cold turkey and limiting leftover eating to this, easy to prepare, food.

Are you traveling this Thanksgiving? Make sure to bring plenty of healthy snacks with you, whether it is for the plane, train, car ride or just pre-dinner munchies. They key for any satiating snack is to make sure it contains both protein and fiber. Here are some of our favorites:
• Kookie Karma
• Celery or Scandanavian Bran Crisps with Justin’s almond butter squeeze packs
• Make your own trail mix (¼ cup of nuts and 2tsp fruit is a good ratio) with dried cranberries or cherries or shredded coconut and, almonds, walnuts and pistachios
• Lara bars (we especially like their new peanut butter & jelly flavor) or Nectar Bars

We tend to focus on food when it comes to Thanksgiving, but don’t forget about the exercise. Plan to do something active on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. If you aren’t going to be near your home gym, bring along some workout DVDs, resistance bands or take a brisk walk outside. If all else fails, jumping jacks, push-ups, crunches and squats do the trick and no equipment or gym membership is required.
